Sewing

YOU CAN TEACH YOURSELF TO SEW!

Start by getting to know the sewing machine you have access to—read the handbook and give yourself time to become familiar with it. The first challenge with any new machine is usually threading it. Once you have that down, practice before sewing fabric: draw straight lines and curves on a piece of paper, then stitch along them. When you feel comfortable, move on to fabric. Begin with a small project, such as a handkerchief or turning an old pair of jeans into shorts. Mending counts as creative practice, too! Next, make a tote bag for yourself or someone you love. I still have the one I made as a teenager, more than thirty years ago. Enjoy the adventure!
